About American Bartenders School

Since 1969, American Bartenders School has helped shape the bartending and hospitality industry in New York City and beyond. What began more than five decades ago as a small vocational bartending program has grown into one of the most recognized and longest-running bartender training schools in the United States.
Over the years, more than 100,000 graduates have passed through our doors. Today, our graduates can be found working in bars, restaurants, lounges, hotels, nightclubs, private event companies, catering halls, stadiums, resorts, cruise ships, and hospitality groups across New York City, across the country, and around the world.
But American Bartenders School has always been about more than simply learning how to pour drinks.
It has always been about opportunity.
A School Built by Veteran Bartenders
One of the things that truly sets American Bartenders School apart is our team.
Nearly everyone who works at the school β from instructors to placement staff to admissions and support personnel β has worked in hospitality themselves. Many are current bartenders, former bartenders, bar managers, restaurant professionals, or longtime hospitality veterans who understand the business from real-world experience, not just theory.
Even more uniquely, many of our instructors attended American Bartenders School themselves at the beginning of their careers.
Some came through the school in the 1970s. Others in the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s. They went on to build successful careers behind the bar, in management, ownership, beverage consulting, nightlife, events, and hospitality operations β and eventually returned to help train the next generation.
That creates something special inside our classrooms.
Our students are taught by people who truly understand the industry because they lived it. They understand the pressure of a Friday night rush. They understand speed, customer service, professionalism, alcohol awareness, teamwork, and what it takes to survive and thrive behind a busy bar.
Most importantly, they understand what it feels like to be new.
More Than a School β A Hospitality Community
American Bartenders School has deep roots in the hospitality industry and longstanding relationships with bars, restaurants, lounges, clubs, hotels, caterers, and hospitality operators throughout New York City.
For decades, employers have turned to our school when they need bartenders who are trained, reliable, professional, and ready to work.

Our students and graduates receive access to a private in-house job board available exclusively to American Bartenders School students and graduates. Employers regularly submit job opportunities directly to us, allowing graduates to connect with real opportunities throughout the city and beyond.
Our job placement assistance department helps students with:
- Job leads and employer referrals
- Resume guidance
- Interview preparation
- Hospitality career advice
- Understanding different types of venues and opportunities
- Navigating the hiring process in NYC hospitality
Whether someone wants to bartend part-time on weekends, work events for extra income, build a long-term career in nightlife and hospitality, or eventually move into management and ownership, we help students understand the many paths available within the industry. And there are many.
The Many Paths of Bartending
Over the last 56+ years, our graduates have gone on to create all kinds of careers and lifestyles. Some become casual bartenders and pick up flexible shifts for supplemental income. Some become full-time career bartenders working in high-end restaurants, cocktail lounges, rooftop bars, hotels, and nightlife venues.
Others have gone on to become: Mixologists and beverage specialists, Bar managers and restaurant managers, Nightlife operators and hospitality entrepreneurs, Catering and event professionals, Brand ambassadors and liquor sales representatives, beverage directors, Venue owners and hospitality executives
For many people, bartending becomes far more than just a job. It becomes a gateway into one of the largest and most dynamic industries in the world.
Hands-On Training for the Real World
At American Bartenders School, we believe bartending is a craft that must be learned through hands-on experience.
Our students train in real bar setups using professional bar tools and equipment while learning:
- Cocktail and drink preparation
- Speed and efficiency behind the bar
- Pouring accuracy and consistency
- Customer service and professionalism
- Beer, wine, spirits, and liqueur knowledge
- Service bar procedures
- POS systems and cash handling
- Alcohol awareness and liquor law fundamentals
- Bar setup, breakdown, and workflow
The goal is simple: prepare students to walk into a real hospitality environment with confidence.
We are not interested in teaching gimmicks or shortcuts. We are focused on practical, real-world bartending skills taught by professionals who understand what employers are actually looking for.
Opportunity in a Changing World
Today, the world is changing rapidly.
Entire industries are being disrupted by automation, outsourcing, and artificial intelligence. Millions of people are reevaluating traditional career paths and searching for practical, affordable skills that can help them begin earning income quickly without spending years in school or taking on massive debt.
Hospitality remains one of the most human industries in the world.
Restaurants, hotels, bars, entertainment venues, and events still rely on personality, communication, energy, professionalism, and human interaction. Great bartenders create experiences. They manage pressure. They connect with people. They help drive the atmosphere and energy of a venue.
Those skills matter.
At American Bartenders School, we believe vocational and trade education plays an increasingly important role in helping people create opportunity for themselves quickly, affordably, and realistically.
That mission has never been more important than it is today.
A Legacy Since 1969
American Bartenders School was founded in 1969 by Jack Tiano with a vision of creating a professional training environment for aspiring bartenders and hospitality workers. More than half a century later, that vision continues.
Generations of students have come through the school looking for opportunity, flexibility, independence, extra income, career growth, or simply a fresh start. Many arrived with no experience at all. Many went on to create incredible careers.
And through it all, American Bartenders School has remained committed to the same core values that built the school from the beginning, Professionalism, Craftsmanship, Opportunity, Hospitality, and Community.
American Bartender’s School has been featured in dozens of news outlets, see a few here.
